The three-day sixth Solar Cookers International (SCI) World Conference which began here today called for launching Satyagraha (non-violence movement) against chemical farming to prevent farmer suicides in the country.

Speaking as keynote speaker at the conference, environment activist Vandana Shiva, said, "The farmers cannot afford costlier fertilisers and due to this reason, many of them have committed suicide in the country till date."

"The input cost of fertilisers will come down after resorting to organic farming," said Shiva.

"Neem coated fertiliser have not served any purpose as the cost of fertiliser is going up due to use of fossil fuel as input. Organic farming will also help prevent migration of farmers to cities," Shiva said.

"There is a need to have smart villages in the country instead of smart cities," she said.

Shiva said it is mandatory for the government of India to frame policy to provide clean water to farmers and people in rural areas.

Experts, scientists, executives, innovators, policymakers, educators, from more than 27 countries are participating in the event.

Janak Palta, recipient of Padma Shri award criticised the Union Government for not promoting use of solar energy among people.
