Three drug peddlers held in J&K

Three alleged drug peddlers were arrested after the police recovered poppy straw and heroin from their possession in Jammu and Kashmir, the police said today.

Sunil Sharma, alias Sonu, and Mohan Singh were arrested after 1.3kg of poppy straw was recovered from their possession during a checking in Samba district this morning, the police said.

Another person -- Ranjit Singh Choudhary, alias Rinku -- was riding a motorcycle when he was intercepted by the police near his house in Gangyal area on Jammu-Pathakote national highway late last night, a police official said.

Rinku, wanted in an attempt-to-murder case registered against him last year, tried to speed away on seeing the police, but was chased and arrested along with 15 grams of heroin, the official said.
 

The accused revealed that he had brought a consignment of heroin from Punjab and was selling it among the youth in the city, the spokesperson said, adding that more recoveries and arrests are expected from his disclosure.

All the three arrested persons were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson added that 10 persons were arrested from Samba district today, on charges of gambling and Rs 6,500 was recovered during the raid.
