Three held for catching migratory Siberian ducks

Three fishermen of Begusarai district of adjoining Bihar were arrested today on charges of capturing migratory Siberian ducks in the Telaiya Dam reservoir in Hazaribagh district.

Following a tip-off, forest department personnel arrested the three from near a bridge on Barakar river, Barhi Forest Range Officer, Gopal Prasad Gupta, said.

Gupta, who conducted the raid, said eight injured Siberian ducks of rare species, a net used for catching them, a boat and bamboo sticks were seized from them.

The three accused fishermen were residents of Charia Bariatpur of Manjhaur police station of Begusarai district.

During interrogation, they said they had come three days ago on the invitation of some locals, who planned to catch the migratory birds in Telaiya.
 

They planned to sell the ducks, weighing between 250 and 300 gram, at Rs 300 each, Gupta said.

Poaching and catching migratory Siberian ducks are prohibited under law.
