Three persons, including a woman
and her daughter, were convicted and sentenced to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment for smuggling marijuana.
Additional Sessions Judge K M Sojitra yesterday sentenced Mumtaz Memon, her daughter Ruksana Pathan, and Munna Sheikh to 10 years in jail for smuggling marijuana, said additional public prosecutor H R Joshi.
He said that Judge Sojitra also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on each of them. If they failed to pay the fine, they would have to
undergo an additional one year in prison, he added.
Memon and her daughter were apprehended on February 22, 2014 from on board the Swaraj Express at Vadodara railway station with 26 kilograms of marijuana, he said.
The two, at the time, were travelling from New Delhi to Bharuch in Gujarat and were supposed to deliver the consignment of contraband to Sheikh in Ankleshwar town, about 100 kilometres from here, Joshi said.
Sheikh was arrested by officials of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on the same day, he said, adding that the NCB filed a charge sheet against the three in August that year.
