Three people were injured when an improvised explosive device detonated at a Moscow bus stop, TASS state news agency said.

Police in the Russian capital confirmed to AFP that "an explosion took place at a bus stop on Pokrovka Road", in the city centre here last night.

"Security forces are establishing the circumstances and the causes of the explosion," a police spokesman said without giving further details.

TASS quoted a police source as saying: "An improvised explosive device exploded at the bus stop, causing three injuries."

Two of the injured were women who were taken to hospital, the source said, without saying how badly they were injured.

Smashed glass could be seen at the bus stop and several police cars, fire engines and an ambulance were at the scene, reportedly.
