Even as religious discourse of one community was in progress, a procession of the other community also passed that way, Superintendent of Police Alankrata Singh said.
When the demand by members of the procession to stop the discourse for some time was turned down, they started beating the preacher who was giving the speech. Two others who went to sort out the matter also suffered stab injuries, the SP said.
Following which, some miscreants in the procession and youths among the audience at the discourse clashed, she added.
While the three injured persons have been admitted to a local hospital, additional police force has been deployed in the area, Singh said.
The situation now is tense but under control, she said.
Meanwhile, an FIR has been lodged against the police station in-charge Dhammaur, three others and 30 unnamed people in connection with the clash.
The FIR was filed by one of the injured with the Kotwali Nagar police.
