The demolition drive against unauthorised religious structures by the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) turned violent yesterday, leaving three injured.

Three persons, including two policemen, were injured after an irate mob pelted stones during the demolition of an illegal religious structure in Nanavali locality of Old Nashik, police said.

The mob threw stones at the NMC demolition squad and also targeted a police van and a fire brigade vehicle, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Laxmikant Patil said the situation was soon brought under control.

The NMC squad managed to demolish the structure by late last night, sources in the civic body said.

The drive against such structures began on November 8 on the directive of the Bombay High Court. These structures have been creating problems for road-development as well as creating traffic bottlenecks.
