Three killed by elephant herd

including two women, were killed by a herd of wild elephants in Assam's Goalpara district today.

The herd had come down from neighbouring Gaor Hills in Goalpara and attacked people at Dhaigoan village killing the three on the spot and damaged several shops and houses, official sources said.

The forest guards rushed to the spot and fired in the air to push the elephants back to the forests, they said adding the dead have been identified.

There has been escalation in human-elephant conflict in recent days with nine elephants killed during this month while four people have been killed by pachyderms.
