Three workers were killed and nine injured when a blast took place in the furnace of a rolling mill in Kala Amb industrial area here today.

Yogender Singh, Station House Officer of the Kala Amb police station, said three workers succumbed to their injuries on way to PGI, Chandigarh.

They have been identified as crane operators, Vidya Sagar (26), a resident of Uttar Pradesh and Mohinder Singh (46), a resident of Bihar, and welder Man Singh [40], a native of Madhya Pradesh, he said.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and their families have been informed. The nine others who were injured were given treatment and are now stated to be out of danger.

Eye-witnesses said some explosive substance might have gone along with the iron scrap in the furnace which exploded during the heating process.
