In a freak accident, three women were today killed and a man was injured when a tree fell on an autorickshaw carrying them, police said.

The mishap took place on Nadiad-Memdabad road near Arera Patia village, about five kms from the city, Nadiad (rural) police inspector J A Thakor said.

Two of the deceased -- Harshita Patel (57) and Lataben Makwana (36) -- who worked as teachers in primary schools at Arera Patia and Andej villages respectively, were on way to their schools when the incident took place, he said.

The third victim, Veenaben Chhasatiya (35), associated with an anganwadi at Arova village, was also travelling to work, he said.

"All three women died on the spot after the tree, which was dry and had weakened by the recent rain and storm, got uprooted and fell on the autorickshaw in which they were travelling," Thakor said.

"Driver Firoz Vora sustained injuries and was taken to Nadiad civil hospital for treatment," he added.
