Three members of a family hailing from Uttar Pradesh were found dead in their hotel room here today with police suspecting it to be a suicide attempt, a senior police official said.

"While head of the family Santosh Maurya (45) survived, his wife Manjita (34), their daughter Sonal (13) and son Sujal (8) died after they consumed sleeping pills as claimed by Maurya," said Sunita Thakare, Additional SP.

She said Maurya was recuperating at a hospital and told police that the family decided to take the extreme step as he has been jobless for last five years.

"However, the exact cause behind their death would be known after the receipt of postmortem report," she said.

The Maurya family had arrived in Shirdi on September 7 and stayed at hotel Neeta.

"They might have consumed sleeping pills on the evening of September 7," Thakre said, adding that Santosh told them that he and his family took the decision to end their life because he was cheated by some people in his financial dealings.
