As many as three members of a family, including two girls and their mother were killed and two others severely affected due to some poisonous gas leak in Vastral area of the city, police said here today.

"Three people including Shyama Kumavat (26) as well as her daughters Sangita (4) and Lalita (3) died today due to a poisonous gas leakage from the bathroom's drainage line at their Silver City Society residence in Vastral area of the city," investigating officer and police inspector Paresh Solanki told PTI.

While, Shyama's husband Govind and their four-month-old son were affected due to the gas leak and admitted into the civil hospital in the city, Solanki said.

As per prima facie investigations, it has emerged that some unknown driver emptied a tanker into a manhole near the house, which could have resulted in the incident, he said.

"It is only after Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) officials and forensic science experts analyse samples from the drainage line would it be known what type of gas had leaked," Solanki said.

Meanwhile, the police has lodged a complaint against an unknown tanker driver under Section 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for causing death due to negligence.

A probe into the incident is on and a team has been assigned to nab the unknown tanker driver.
