Three panchayats of Jammu and Kashmir have been conferred awards for 2013 by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj under the Panchayat Empowerment and Accountability Initiative Scheme (PEAIS).
Best utilisation of powers and services by three panchayats of Nagrotra, Kota and Nagrota-Barnoti have brought laurels to Jammu and Kashmir, an official spokesman said.
Members of these panchayats led by Rameshwar Dutt, sarpanch of Nagrota, Kant Kumar, sarpanch of Kota and Kamal Kishore, sarpanch Nagrota-Barnoti in a meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah here today, presented the details of their panchayats on utilisation of powers to redress public grievances and implement development programmes, he said.

The Panches, Naib Sarpanches and Sarpanches of these award winning panchayats narrated their experience to the Chief Minister and making Panchayats nerve centres of socio-economic development, the spokesman said.
Expressing satisfaction on the awards won by the three panchayats for their best utilisation of powers and rendering outstanding service to the people, Omar Abdullah said, they have shown way to other panchayats as to how powers are utilised.
The Chief Minister reiterated his determination to further strengthen the state's Panchayat system and make it nucleolus of socio-economic change in the rural areas, he said.
Sarpanch of Nagrota Gram Panchayat presented a cheque of Rs 1 lakh to the Chief Minister for the relief of earthquake survivors of Doda, Kistwar and Ramban districts.
