The villagers alleged that the police had failed to take action against the main suspect, Sunil (19), in the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl, whose mutilated body was found in a vacant plot in Ambenagar village here.

The protesters pelted stones at a police team when it reached the spot to take the body.

Three policemen, including sub-inspector Surendra Singh Yadav and two constables, were injured in the stone-pelting Superintendent of Police Ratan Kant Pandey said.

He said the situation has been brought under control and police force deployed in the area.

"Police has also launched a hunt to nab the absconding accused," he added.
