Three schoolchildren were killed and seven others injured today in Pakistan when their bus fell in a drain here.

"At least 50 children of Shaheen Model School Kahna were in the bus when it fell in a drain at Suay Asil Ferozpur Road. Three children, aged between 9 and 12, died while seven other suffered serious injuries in the accident," Punjab Emergency Service Rescue spokesman Jam Sajjad told PTI.

He said the bus fell in the drain because of over speeding.

"The driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a turn," he said, adding the rescue officials reached the spot and joined the efforts already initiated by the locals to rescue the children.

"Some 40 children have been rescued and later handed over to their parents," Sajjad said.

The school administration has arranged pick and drop service for the children. The bus was going to drop them at their homes.

The families of the children gathered at the spot and protested, shouting slogans of 'Go Nawaz go'. They also demanded exemplary punishment for the culprits.

"We have arrested the school principal, Khali Jamil, while the driver and conductor of the bus have managed to flee," senior police officer Haider Ashraf said. The local administration has sealed the school.
