Three women died after caesarian section (CS) deliveries in the state run Veer Suredra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research at Burla, prompting Odisha government to launch an inquiry into the episode.
The three women who had undergone caesarian section on Friday evening died late in the night, Head of the Gynaecology department, Lal Mohan Nayak said.
"Nine surgeries took place in the gynaecology department on Friday. However, three women died and the other six patients are fine," Dr Nayak said.
The deceased were identified as Sulochana Pradhan (26) of Belpahar in Jharsuguda distrait, Kalpana Mahakur (27) of Banjbahali in Bargarh district and Kasturi Seth (25) of Sialkhandata in Bargarh district.
Director of VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Sunamali Bag, said it was an unfortunate incident and the matter is being inquired.
Concerned over the incident, the state government announced that a high level committee was probing into the death of the three women.
As part of the inquiry, Director Medical Education and Training (DMET) B C Das visited the hospital and discussed with Institute Director Sunamali Bag and other senior doctors.
The DMET, who also visited the Operation Theatre and the ward where the women had been taken after the surgeries, said a team of experts would conduct a thorough inquiry and action would be taken on the basis of its findings.
Dr Nayak said Sulaochana Pradhan and Kalpna Mahakur had sickle cell disease which could be reason behind their death. "We are yet to know why Kasturi Patel died."
"All the three patients came out of operation theater in a good condition. They died 4 to 5 hours later," he said.
While babies delivered by two of the three women who died after Caesarian sections, are fine, the baby girl of one deceased died yesterday, hospital sources said.
Angry over the incident, family members of the deceased women demonstrated at the hospital this morning demanding action against those responsible for the mishap and compensation of at least Rs 10 lakh each to their families.
"Everything was normal when we shifted Kalpana to the hospital. However, she suddenly died after the operation. I am yet to understand what went wrong," said Kalpana Mahakur's husband, Rukmana Mahakur.
Another relative of Kalpana alleged that no senior doctor was present during the operation.
