Several Tibetan activists today staged a protest outside the UN office here carrying mock coffins of people who have self-immolated in Tibet for its freedom.
Members of the Tibetan Youth Congress, a Tibetan NGO, claimed that about 150 people have immolated themselves in this struggle, of which over 120 have died since 2009.
The protesters demanded that a special session of the United Nations on Tibet be convened.
The NGO said Tibetans inside Tibet have set themselves on fire to protest, what it alleged, was the "illegal occupation" of the region by China.
"In light of the seriousness of the situation, we appeal to the United Nations to convene a special session on Tibet," it said.
