A tiger today attacked and killed a zookeeper when he was cleaning the animal's enclosure in China's eastern Jiangxi province.

The accident happened in Chuntai Park, Yichun City when a tiger pounced on the zookeeper, surnamed Gong, who was cleaning the tiger's enclosure.

Other zoo staff rushed to drive away the tiger and injected it with tranquilizers, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Despite treatment, Gong, who suffered serious injures, died one hour after the attack.

This is the third time an animal has killed a keeper at a zoo in China.

In 2013, a zookeeper was killed by a South China tiger on when he entered an enclosure at the Shanghai Zoo to clean the cage.

In 2010, a Bengal tiger killed its keeper and dragged the man's body around the cage as visitors looked on in horror.
