A tigress today killed a girl and ate a part of the body before it was recovered in Bagda forest range of Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh.

The tigress, identified as 'T-213', killed 17-year-old Bharti, who hailed from Vidisha district and worked at a brick kiln, Itarsi Forest Ranger Lakhanlal Yadav said.

The big cat, around three-year-old, had been shifted from Kanha Tiger Reserve to Satpura Tiger Reserve near here last year. It was struggling to 'mark' its territory and frequented human habitats, he said.

It strayed into area near the brick kiln this afternoon and pounced on the girl and dragged her into nearby jungle.

"People in the vicinity raised alarm and called us, but the tigress didn't leave the girl's body for over an hour. More than 100 people tried to recover the body," he said.

Finally the Forest Department personnels busted crackers which made the tigress abandon the remains of the girl.

The animal was shooed away into to the jungle. Forest Department had announced a compensation of Rs four lakh for the family of the girl, Yadav said.
