Two timber smugglers, masquerading as militants, were arrested by police during an ambush in Pulwama district of Kashmir valley, police said today.

Ishfaq Ahamd Lone and Bilal Ahmad Magray, both residents of Tral, were spotted by an Army ambush party of 42 Rashtriya Rifles at Nai Basti area of Tral, a police spokesman said.

On being challenged, the duo fled the spot and threw away a toy AK-47 rifle which they were carrying, he said.

"They were chased and later arrested. The toy gun was also seized," he said.

During investigations, the spokesman said it was found that they were involved in timber smuggling and used to spread terror among the local by masquerading as militants carrying the toy gun.

A case has been registered against the arrested smugglers in a local police station, the spokesman said.
