An AIADMK councillor of Vadipatti Town panchayat in the district received a parcel containing a 'time-bomb', which later turned out to be fake.

Police said the parcel addressed to councillor Tirupathi had been left on his two wheeler parked outside his house at midnight. His curious neighbours noticed it this morning and opened it, found a timer device with PVC pipes connected to it and immediately informed police.

Police and a bomb squad rushed to the spot and seized the device after which it was placed in a bucket in an isolated spot to try and defuse it using a long rope. However, it did not explode.

Further examination revealed that the PVC pipes had been filled with sand and it was a dummy device, police said.

The councillor has been receiving anonymous threats over the past few months, reportedly from his political rivals.
