Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made a dazzling return to host the Golden Globe awards as they kept the audience in splits with their quick barbs on Hollywood demigods.
"Welcome to the 71st Annual Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's Lee Daniel's The Butler Golden Globe Awards!," their opening monologue said.
Fey and Poehler, who are old friends and worked together on Saturday Night Live for many years, were in no mood to spare any actor including the awards organiser Hollywood Foreign Press.
"We are very happy to be back. We are hosting the Golden Globes for our second time. Because this is Hollywood, and if something kind of works, they'll just keep doing it until everybody hates it!," Fey said alluding to their second year as hosts.
Hosting awards is considered a tricky thing in Hollywood often inviting sharp criticism and backlash but Fey and Poehler made the most of their time by cracking jokes at the expense of Hollywood's who's who be it Martin Scorsese, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, George Clooney or Leonardo DiCaprio.
"Woody Allen is the recipient of this year's Cecil B DeMille Award, just a few years after Martin Scorsese won it. I assume the award is for tiniest man who wears glasses," Poehler said.
'American Hustle' was the big winner at the awards including best picture in a comedy or musical, best actress for Amy Adams and best supporting gong for Jennifer Lawrence but it was Bradley Cooper's perm that got the vote from Tina.
"Bradley Cooper is here, star of American Hustle! Interesting trivia: The original title of that movie was The Explosion at the Wig Factory," Fey said.
Streep, who was in the audience, was also targetted by the duo as they joked about her role in 'August: Osage County'.
"Meryl Streep is so brilliant in August: Osage County, proving that there are still great parts in Hollywood for Meryl Streeps over 60," Fey said to a laughing Streep.
Sandra Bullock-George Clooney's space disaster drama 'Gravity' won the best director award for its helmer Alfonso Cuaron but it did not survive Fey's humour.
"Gravity is nominated for Best Film. It's the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die then to spend one more minute with a woman his own age," Fey said while taking a dig at Clooney's love life.
Poehler managed to call out to Matt Damon and remind him that he was in a big company.
"Matt Damon is here, for Behind the Candelabra. Matt, on any other night, in any other room, you would be a big deal. But tonight, and don't take this the wrong way, you're basically a garbage person," Poehler said.
Matthew McConaughey, winner of the best actor in a motion picture drama for his 'Dallas Buyers Club' role, was next to get roasted.
"Matthew McConaughey did amazing work this year. For his role in Dallas Buyers Club, he lost 45 pounds. Or what actresses call being in a movie," Fey observed.
