As part of the on-going green initiative across the knitwear hub of Tirupur "Vanathukkul Tiruppur" (Tiruppur inside forest), the people in this city have planted over 1.25 saplings in just 100 days.

The effort was initiated with the support of 'VETRY", an NGO, which was committed to preserving natural systems, as a homage to the late President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, setting a target to plant one lakh saplings in four months, which started on August 23.

However, it crossed the target in 100 days and this green success was celebrated at a function today in Tirupur, in the presence of Tamil Nadu Forest minister, M S M Anandan and senior government officials and who's who of the city, a release said.

The industrialists have contributed Rs six crore towards a corpus fund that will be used for the protection and watering of the planted saplings for the next two years.

Tirupur industrialists have undertaken another green initiative, claimed to be the first of its kind globally and achieved Zero Liquid Discharge in their processing units.

The dyeing units of the town have installed a daily recycling capacity of about eight crore litres of water per day, ensuring saving of pumping fresh water to that extent every day for the factories, it said.
