The ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition BJP today paid tribute to Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his birth anniversary.
Senior TMC leader and state minister Arup Roy paid floral tribute to Mookerjee at his statue in the city.
Asked if the TMC was following the BJP in celebrating Mookerjee's birthday, Roy said the West Bengal government has been celebrating the birth anniversary of Mookerjee every year. "He was a good son of the nation."
The BJP also celebrated Mookerjee's birth anniversary in several functions all over the state.
BJP state unit president Dilip Ghosh paid tribute to Mookerjee at a function in Baharampur in Murshidabad district. The party also observed Bharat Mata puja on this occasion in Hooghly district.
Party National Secretary Rahul Sinha garlanded Mookerjee's statue in Kolkata while senior BJP leader Mukul Roy paid tribute to Mookerjee at a function in front of Calcutta University's College Street campus.
In his speech, Roy talked about the sacrifices Mookerjee made for the nation.
