With the Supreme Court refusing to reschedule the dates of West Bengal panchayat polls, the CPI(M) today accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of creating a constitutional crisis.

"The Trinamool basically wants the panchayats to be run by BDO, SDOs. They have created a constitutional crisis in Bengal. They don't believe in bestowing power to the rural people," CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose, who is the Left Front chairman, told reporters here.

Stating that his party has been demanding the panchayat polls be held in time, he said "The Trinamool Congress was not interested in holding the panchayat polls.

"From the very beginning they have been creating roadblocks in the panchayat poll process," Bose said.

He said that the tenure of many panchayats had expired and many Zilla parishads were not working.

"It will affect the rural economy and rural people. If they had agreed to what they have agreed to now, then by now the polls would have been over," he said.

"After coming to power in 1977. We had hold the first panchayat polls by 1978. And this 26 month old government is so incompetent that it has failed to properly hold a single election during its tenure," said Bose.
