Trinamool Congress, which has been facing flak of opposition parties over resignation of State Election Commissioner S R Upadhyay, today hoped whoever takes over will hold the counting of votes on October 9 as scheduled.
"We don't have any reaction. He wanted to resign, he has resigned. It is his matter. We hope that whoever takes over will hold the counting of votes as scheduled," a senior TMC leader told PTI on condition of anonymity.
The West Bengal State Election Commissioner had yesterday said repolling would be held in some booths of Bidhannagar and Asansol Corporations and Bally in Howrah, while counting of votes to all three civic bodies would be done on October 9.
The opposition CPI(M)-led Left Front, BJP and Congress demanded fresh elections to all three municipal bodies alleging violence and loot of votes by the TMC.
Following the Commissioner's decision to postpone counting, TMC resorted to a sit-in at the same venue last morning.
Apparently under pressure from political parties in the wake of the violence-marred civic polls, West Bengal State Election Commissioner S R Upadhyay today resigned.
Upadhyay submitted the resignation to Governor K N Tripathi at the Raj Bhavan.
