No single party has merited the status of "principal opposition party" in Kolkata Municipal Corporation for failure to get the required minimum 10 percent of seats in the just-concluded election to the civic body.
City Mayor Sovan Chhatopadhyay said that none of the opposition parties got the minimum 10 per cent of seats in the April 21 KMC election, required to be given the status of principal opposition party.
In the outgoing Mayor-in-Council, the Left Front had secured 32 seats out of 141 and CPI-M's share was more than 23, allowing it to be given the status.
