It appeared that he was stranguled to death, Tripathy said adding five persons were arrested in connection with the killing.
Haldar had gone missing on yesterday while returning from a party meeting.
TMC leaders of the district alleged that CPI(M) was responsible for the murder, a charge denied by the left party.
Police sources, however, said land dispute and internal bikering of the party were suspected to be the reason behind the murder.
One of the arrested, Shajahan Laskar, was earlier with the CPI(M) but joined the TMC after the latter came to power in West Bengal, the sources said.
