A TMC leader, who is the chief patron of a club at Barasat in North 24 Parganas district, stepped down from the post on Friday after it invited West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to inaugurate Kali Puja.

Sunil Mukherjee, who is also the chairman of Barasat Municipality, stepped down after he came to know that the club officials had invited Dhankhar as the as the chief guest to inaugurate Kali Puja organised by it.

"I should have been informed as I am the chief patron of the club. I have strong reservations as I feel that the governor is biased against our state government. So I decided to step down on my own," Mukherjee said.

A senior club official said that according to the club's rules and regulations it is not necessary to inform the chief patron about the guest list.

Kali Puja will be celebrated in Bengal on October 27 across the state.

Dhankhar, who took oath as the governor of West Bengal on July 30, has been at loggerheads with the state government over several issues - ranging from his seating at the Durga Puja carnival to comments on his security and the state government - since he rushed to Jadavpur University on September 19 to 'rescue' union minister Babul Supriyo who had been gheraoed by a section of its students.
