Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Shekhar Roy has asked the President to "initiate action" against Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh for his statements "denigrating" the national anthem.

Singh on Tuesday had said that the term adhinayak in the national anthem should be replaced with mangal as it praises "Angreji Shashak" of pre-Independence period.

"Jan-Gan-Man adhinayak jai ho... 'adhinayak' for whom. It praises 'angreji shashak'. British time. It should be amended and replaced by word 'jan-gan-man mangal gaye'," Singh had said at the 26th convocation ceremony of the University of Rajasthan.

Seeking removal of Singh from the Governor's post, Roy in a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee, has requested for taking "note of the impugned statement of Kalyan Singh in proper perspective and consider initiating such action as he deemed fit and proper including his removal forthwith to uphold the dignity of India's national anthem."

Roy has maintained that Singh's statement is an attempt to denigrate the national anthem.

"The statement of the Governor as circulated and telecast in the media seemed to be veiled attempt to denigrate the national anthem of India....Which was otherwise violative of the provisions of the Constitution of India," Roy's letter said.
