BJP today accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of "unleashing violent attacks" on its workers under the "pretext" of communal clashes as part of her "vote bank politics".

"Under Banerjee, TMC leaders have unleashed violent attacks on BJP workers under the pretext of communal clashes because of Durga immersion and Muharram falling together. The TMC's is to send a strong message to Muslims after its government received flak from the High Court.

"The HC directly accused the govt of practising vote bank appeasement politics. Scared of loosing her core voters before 2019, Mamata Banerjee craftily engendered a communal situation and silently supported Muslim rioters linked to TMC to unleash attacks on Hindus in over 8 districts of Bengal," BJP National Secretary Sidharth Nath Singh said in a statement.

Singh, who is also BJP's co-incharge of West Bengal, said TMC wants to silence BJP as it is scared of its growth in the state.

"After assembly elections she has bought over leaders of CPM and Congress but have failed with BJP, so has been using violence," he alleged.

BJP has also demanded arrest of a TMC MLA Arjun Singh over the communal clashes. A party worker was killed in Malda by rioters, it said.
