Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam today launched his government's Pongal gift pack scheme, aimed at benefiting 1.8 crore families, by distributing it to 14 ration card holders here.

Panneerselvam had last week announced the gift pack that includes a kg of raw rice and sugarcane each and said it would be distributed before the Pongal festival, falling on Jan 14, through ration shops across the state.

The gift hamper also includes cashew and dry grapes, all of which are used in making Pongal, a sweet dish, on the occasion of the Tamil harvest festival.

To mark the rollout of the programme, Panneerselvam gave away the gift hampers to 14 families at the Secretariat here, a government release said.

A total of 1.83 crore ration card holders will benefit from the government move and Rs 200 crore has been earmarked for this purpose.
