TN CM, Stalin pay homage at memorial of Muthurama Thevar

: Tamil Nadu chief Minister O Panneerselvam today paid homage to freedom fighter late Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar at his memorial at Pasumpon in this district today to mark his 107th birth anniversary celebrations.

Later, the CM also inaugurated a feast in connection with the ceremony.

DMK leader M K Stalin also paid homage to the leader and later told reporters his party had started several welfare schemes in the name of the late freedom fighter.

Besides these two leaders, thousands of people also paid homage at the Thevar memorial.

Officials said elaorate security arrangements had been made with police monitoring the entire venue with the help of a drone in the wake of violence in the past during the celebrations.
 

The death anniversary of Dalit leader Immanuel Sekaran is observed on Sept 11 each year at Paramakudi village and Thevar gurupooja celebration is held from Oct 28 to 30 at Pasumpon.

In 2011, five persons were killed and 30 injured when police opened fire at Paramakudi on Sept 11 when those who had gathered to pay homage to the leader allegedly turned violent.

In 2012, six were killed in Thevar gurupooja violence.

Prohibitory orders were clamped from Oct 25 to 31 in Ramanathapuram district when the gurupooja for Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar was to be celebrated.
