The Tamil Nadu Bishops' council today expressed concern over the death of some farmers in the state and urged the government and the Centre to provide adequate compensation to the bereaved families.

The governments should not go into the reasons for the death of the farmers-like whether it was natural death or suicide, Antony Pappusamy, its president, said.

They should understand that deaths were due to drought conditions which didn't develop overnight, he said.

The government should have foreseen drought and taken adequate steps to neutralise the impact and make farmers feel at ease. The government's economic policies also aggravated the situation, he said.

It is the government's duty to provide relief to them when the drought has hit them hard with crops withering, he added.
