Following the case of a suspected honour killing of a teenaged girl in Sivaganga district, the CPI (M) today demanded that the Tamil Nadu government enact a separate legislation to deal with the issue.

CPI (M) state unit Secretary G Ramakrishnan claimed that this was the fourth such incident after the government had recently ruled out the need for a separate law to deal with honour killings.

"Chief Minister O Panneerselvam had said (in the Assembly) that there had been no honour killing and therefore such a law was not required. But this is the fourth such incident within two weeks of his announcement," he said in a statement.

Similar killings were reported from Theni, Tirunelveli and Tiruvarur districts, he said adding that the party demanded that a separate law should be passed to deal with this issue.

A 19-year-old girl, who had eloped and married a boy of another caste, was allegedly murdered by her father in Sivaganga recently.
