TN expands 'Amma' canteens to nine corporations

The Tamil Nadu government today expanded the popular 'Amma' canteen scheme to nine more corporations.

Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said these canteens would come up in each of the nine corporations across the state -- Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Salem, Tiruppur, Tuticorin, Vellore and Erode.

More items would be introduced in the menu in the canteens in Chennai, she said.

"Following the demands from the general public, the canteens in Chennai would serve "Pongal" and samber for Rs five, in addition to idlis that are already served for Re one. As for lunch, lemon rice or curryleaf rice would be introduced for Rs five," she said.
 

From September this year, these canteens in Chennai would serve Chappatis and side dish for Rs three, she said.

'Amma' canteens launched by the Chief Minister provide meals at affordable cost for the floating population in Chennai city so far.

The canteens served idlis for Re one, sambar rice for Rs five and curd rice for Rs three.
