Pressing for steps to ensure harmonious fishing in their traditional areas, fishermen from six districts in Tamil Nadu today decided to abstain from fishing for one month from February 13.

The decision was taken at a meeting of office-bearers of fishermen associations from Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Karaikal and Ramanathapuram held at Jagadapattinam in Pudukottai District.

They demanded that the fishermen from both the countries should be allowed to fish in harmony in their traditional areas in Indian and Sri Lankan waters, Ramanathapuram Fishermen's Association President P Sesuraja said.

The meeting also wanted the officials to take stern action against those using banned fishing nets, he told PTI from Jagadapattinam.

The announcement comes after the January 27 meeting in Chennai where fishermen representatives of both Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka discussed ways to resolve the vexed issue of traditional fishing rights in Palk Straits.
