TN for plastic-free villages, SHGs, schools; announces awards

In a bid to encourage plastic-free environment in the state, Tamil Nadu government has proposed to give awards for three each -- villages, self help groups (SHGs) and schools, which excel in collecting plastic waste.

While the villages should be plastic-free and committed in fighting plastic waste, self help groups should work towards the cause and schools should maintain a plastic-free campus, the state environment ministry said in a release.

The first three winners, shall get Rs five, Rs three and Rs two lakh respectively in each of the categories, it said.

Work towards the plastic-free environment should have been undertaken between March 1, 2013 and February 28, 2014.
 

Entries for villages and SHGs should be routed through District Collectors, schools shall forward their nominations through Chief Education Officers to www.Environment.Tn.Nic.In, before March 31 this year, it added.
