The Chief Minister has approved Rs 879.78 crore for the year 2012-13 and more than half of it would be spent on providing drinking water and underground drainage facilities to newly added areas of the expanding city.
Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) will implement drinking water and underground drainage projects to the tune of Rs 452.77 crore covering newly added areas including from the suburbs, an official release here said.
This would also include extensive waste disposal and sewerage management initiatives which include procurement of new machines and accessories besides setting up new facilities and the government will subsidise a sum of Rs 500 crore of the total amount, it said.
Laying of roads and erecting street lights were also part of the proposals, it added.
