Locked in the Cauvery river dispute, neighbours Tamil Nadu and Karnataka should share the available water without causing any hardship to farmers in either states, JDS leader H D Kumaraswamy said today.

Speaking to reporters at the airport here, Kumaraswamy, recently elected as JDS Legislature Party leader in Karnataka, said farmers in neither state should suffer due to the dispute.

"We have to share the water equally without affecting both states' farmers... They should not suffer," he said.

While the JDS leader had been critical of the ruling Congress, charging it with using "money power" to win the May 28 Periyapatna Assembly poll, he however said one has to wait for at least six months to evaluate the new government's performance.
