Days after a woman techie was murdered at a city railway station and another committed suicide after her morphed picture was uploaded on Facebook, DMK chief M Karunanidhi today launched a scathing attack on Tamil Nadu Police, alleging it has failed to protect the common man.

"I urge the police department to also engage themselves in giving protection to the ordinary people and strongly condemn them for not doing so," he said.

Referring to the suicide of a young woman in Salem after her morphed picture was uploaded on Facebook, Karunanidhi sarcastically said the police department should not think that providing security to those in power and monitoring activities of the opposition parties alone is its work.

Police had faced flak over the suicide issue, as the victim's parents alleged inaction and demand of bribe.

The DMK chief also referred to Madras High Court's directive to Tamil Nadu government yesterday over the issue and several queries it had raised on security aspects.

Karunanidhi conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families of both women.

Infosys employee Swathi was hacked to death by an unidentified man on a platform in Nugambakkam Railway Station here on June 24 in full public view.

A Vinupriya, a Chemistry graduate, committed suicide by hanging herself in her house in Salem on June 27 after a morphed picture, showing her in an obscene fashion, was uploaded on Facebook by unidentified persons.
