As the Crime Branch CID today took over the probe into the apparent suicide of a 27-year-old woman DSP allegedly due to harassment by superiors, DMK and other political parties in Tamil Nadu demanded for a CBI investigation into the case.
Two days after the suicide of Tiruchengode DSP Vishnu Priya, who was found hanging in her residence-cum-office complex, CB-CID DSP Rajan took over the case formally and received documents related to it, police said in Namakkal.
In Chennai, DMK, Congress, CPI-M and VCK demanded a CBI probe into the case.
The suicide of the DSP took a new turn with her father Ravi and one of her batch mates yesterday raising allegations of harassment by her superiors in connection with a case related to the murder of Dalit youth Gokulraj, which she was probing.
Pressing for a CBI probe, Vishnu Priya's close friend DSP Uma Maheswari, posted in Keezhakarai in Ramanathapuram district, told reporters in Namakkal that the officer was "harassed" by her superiors as they wanted some persons to be arrested in the murder case, which had caste overtones.
Rejecting the charge, police have said they recovered a 16-page 'suicide note' in which Vishnu Priya had stated that it was her third suicide attempt and requested her mother not to create an issue over it.
In a statement, DMK President M Karunanidhi said the comments made by the DSP's father and those involved in the case, as appeared in a section of media cannot be "neglected" and therefore the case had to be transferred to CBI.
"As requested by various sections of society, in order to bring out the facts, the case has to be transferred to CBI," he said and also wanted the Madras High Court to monitor the investigation to bring out the facts.
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President E V K S Elangovan said his party would stage an agitation on September 23 seeking CBI probe into the suicide.
VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan and CPI(M) also demanded a CBI probe into the incident.
