TN, Pondy remembers Rajiv Gandhi on death anniversary

Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was remembered in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry today on the occasion of his 22nd death anniversary.

Governor K Rosiah and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa administered the anti-terrorism day pledge at Raj Bhavan and State Secretariat in Chennai, respectively.

They also paid floral tributes to the portrait of Gandhi, who was assassinated this day in 1991 by a human bomb at the nearby Sriperumbudur.

Meanwhile, Congress supporters paid tributes at the leader's memorial at nearby Sriperumbudur where he was assassinated by a human bomb in 1991 during an election rally.

A Sadbhavana Jyoti, which commenced from Bangalore before proceeding to Kerala and Puducherry, culminated at the memorial, AICC secretary P Sudhakar Reddy said.
 

He said Congress supporters took a pledge against terrorism and communalism at the event attended by Union Minister KH Muniappa and other senior Congress leaders including TNCC president BS Gnanadesikan.

Floral tributes were also paid to the leader at the TNCC headquarters here.

In neighbouring Puducherry, Chief Minister N Rangasamy led the Union Territory in paying homage to the former Prime Minister. He also administered the 'anti-terrorism' pledge.

Earlier, in the PCC office, Minister of State in PMO V Narayanasamy, PCC leader A V Subramanian, leader of the opposition V Vaithilingam and host of other Congress leaders paid floral tributes to the portrait of Gandhi.

They also took anti-terrorism pledge.

Later Narayanasamy headed a padayatra from the party office to Thattanchavady, covering a distance of four km, to garland a statue of Rajiv Gandhi and also to flag-off a motorcycle procession by volunteers of the youth congress proceeding to Sriperumbudur.
