IPL scam: Top cop suspended in TN

IPS officer Kumar had alleged making charges against his colleagues in the context of match fixing scam

Press Trust of India Chennai
Tamil Nadu government today suspended senior IPS officer G Sampath Kumar for allegedly making charges against his colleagues in the context of IPL match fixing scam.

Kumar, who is currently posted as Superintendent, Railway in Tiruchi has been placed under suspension, a top police official told PTI but refused to elaborate the reasons for the disciplinary action.

Kumar, while deposing before the Justice Mukul Mudgal committee, is believed to have told the panel that state police officers avoided investigating the match-fixing angle to the May 12, 2013, IPL tie between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals.

However, Kumar, who was part of the IPL betting racket investigation, had come under the scanner in the wake of allegations by an arrested bookie who made certain charges against the official.

There was speculation that CB-CID chief Narinderpal Singh had written to DGP K Ramanujam recommending Kumar's suspension and his custodial interrogation.
