Opposing the proposal for creation of Western Ghats Ecology Authority (WGEA), Tamil Nadu Government today said it would not compromise on its rights.

"The government (headed by Jayalalithaa) would not compromise on its rights," state Forest Minister Pachamal told the state Assembly today.

He was replying to a query by DMK member Thangam Thennarasu, who raised doubts on whether the WGEA would take away the state's rights on the Western Ghats.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had on March 16 written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the creation of WGEA was against federal principles since it would only erode the authority of the state government and create an unnecessary layer of power in the name of conservation.
