Prices of three major banana varieties are expected to remain stable in January-February period next year, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has said.
An analysis and trader survey by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has advised farmers to keep update on prevailing market price before harvesting their produce as prices of three major banana cultivars, like Poovan, Karpooravalli and Nendran are expected to remain stable in January-February next, a release said.
The analysis carried out by the Agro Marketing Intelligence and Business Promotion Centre in the university, revealed that the expected average farm gate price would be Rs 24-27 per kg for Poovan, Rs 23-25 for Karpooravalli and Rs 30-35 for Nendran in Coimbatore wholesale commission market.

This is also used for leaf cultivation in all over Tamil Nadu and certain parts of Kerala and present rate for this banana is Rs 30 per kg in the market here, the survey said.
Being a popular table variety, the major cultivation pockets of Karpooravalli are located in Central and Southern districts of Tamil Nadu and parts of Kerala. It is the sweetest banana variety among the Indian cultivars and inflow to the wholesale commission market here is consistent throughout the year and the prevailing price is Rs 30 per kg.
The Centre carried out price behaviour of both these bananas prevailing for the last 12 years in the city market.
A popular variety in Kerala where it is relished as a fruit and also used for processing, Nendran's commercial cultivation has picked up rapidly in Tamil Nadu in the recent past.
The present market price for Nendran is Rs 45 per kg in the wholesale commission market here and the analysis has been made for the last seven years' price behaviour, said.
