Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has issued 'consent' for establishing two facilities for disposal of sludge generated from textile dyeing effluents.
TNPCB is making efforts for disposal of hazardous waste in an environment safe manner and has identified 2771 units generating hazardous wastes under the Hazardous Wastes (Management, Handling and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2008 as of March 31, 2012.
According to state Environment Ministry policy note for the year 2013-14, a common hazardous waste treatment storage and disposal facility was in operation at SIPCOT industrial estate at Gummidipoondi near here.

"Consent to establish has been issued by the Board to these two facilities. To adopt recycling and reuse principles, cement industries are encouraged to utilise hazardous sludge from various industries like textile, engineering, chemical and petroleum," it said.
Various cement manufacturing units are using these hazardous wastes either on trial basis or permanently as raw material or fuel, it said, adding action was being taken for establishing a common hazardous waste treatment storage and disposal facility at Perundurai in Erode district.
On the bio-waste management front, TNPCB has so far 'inventoried' over 4000 government and private hospitals and all of these have made agreement with the Common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facilities (CBMWTF) for disposal of biomedical waste.
There are 11 CBMWTF in the state in districts including Kancheepuram and Coimbatore which have two such facilities, it said. They are equipped with autoclave, shredder, incinerator and secured landfill facilities, it added.
