Nearly 300 members of a Muslim outfit were arrested for picketing a police station near here demanding action against some forest officials who allegedly assaulted a person, who was held for possessing sea cucumbers, police said.

The Mandapam forest officials had a few days ago nabbed two persons, Abdul Wahid and Abdul Farooq from the district, for allegedly possessing sea cucumbers (an endangered coral reef species) and later handed over to the Marine police.

While Abdul Farooq was remanded to judicial custody, Abdul Wahid was admitted to a government hospital after he alleged that he was assaulted by the forest rangers, they said.

However, the forest officials have denied the charges levelled against them.

Condmening the failure of police to register an FIR against the officers responsible, members of Tamil Nadu Towheed Jamath picketed the Mandapam Marine police station near here.

The protesters were detained, police said.
