The administration of East and West Godavari districts have arrived on a consensus to divert traffic via the new Gaman bridge near Divan Cheruvu in East Godavari, Rajamahendravaram Member of Parliament Maganti Muralimohan today said.

He said that the decision was taken in view of the rising number of accidents on the Gundugolanu-Kovvuru leg of the national highway, adding that potholes on the Gundugolanu road was also creating traffic bottlnecks.

M Venkateswara Rao, the MLA from Gopalapuram who also took part in the meeting, informed that the Gundugolanu-Kovvuru road had seen 418 accidents in the last three years, resulting in the death of 203 persons.

Muralimohan said that in view of rising traffic and the problems it was causing, today's meeting decided to allow heavy vehicles to ply over Gaman bridge between 8am to 11am and 4pm to 8pm.

The MP informed that the Central government had sanctioned Rs 1,500 crores to four-lane 60 kilometres of the Kovvuru-Gundugolanu stretch which would need at least 30 months for completion.
