Crisis-hit SpiceJet today said selling tickets at low rates is the "right thing to do" provided it is done in the "right way".

Kapoor's remark comes against the backdrop of all major airlines, including national carrier Air India and private airline Jet, lowering their fares significantly to "stimulate demand" during the lean March quarter.

"Good to see other Indian carriers have sales to stimulate demand. We took heat for it. But was and is the right thing to do, if done right!" SpiceJet Chief Operating Officer Sanjiv Kapoor tweeted.

SpiceJet, which was the first carrier to lower fares last January and then continued it frequently, had come under severe criticism both from the domestic carriers as well as the regulator DGCA for such a move.

Frequent heavy discount sales by SpiceJet are one of the major factors blamed for current financial mess at the carrier.

Last month, the Civil Aviation Ministry had proposed capping airfares at both minimum and maximum levels.

The government is of the view that some of the companies are in danger of facing huge losses due to these huge discounts in fares with some of the fares not even covering the operating costs.
